Our History

Kari Cullen began Delta Gymnastics as a Parks and Recreation summer program in 1975. The large response in the summer prompted Kari in 1976 to develop the program into a year round program. Delta Gymnastics began operating out of the small gym at the Tsawwassen Junior High (now SDSS), with over 30 members participating.

In 1977 Parks and Recreational suggested that the club operate independently from the Municipality and administer its own programs, and in 1981 we moved to the SDRC using halls A,B and C.

In 1987 Delta Gymnastics began to search for their own facility. After thousands of hours of work, countless fundraisers, and many presentations, our goal started to be realized.

In 1989 Delta Gymnastics was reconstituted as a non-profit society. The club began to grow rapidly and work began to find a permanent place for our programs.

In 1993, after raising over $300,000 towards the building of the facility our new home was opened at the South Delta Recreation Centre with approximately 300 participants.

In January 2002 the quest for an expanded facility began. Our current facility has reached maximum capacity, with waitlists growing for programs each session, increasing demand for expansion of existing programs and new sport options. We have plans to expand so that we can accommodate new and current gymnasts, and a viewing area so that parents can watch their children.

In May 2002, the Delta Parks and Recreation Commission approved the proposal for expansion, pending approval of Council, but an arson fire on June 25, 2002 put our expansion goals on hold for a few years. The fire devastated the facility and all equipment inside. Programs were relocated to two different facilities over the course of eight months, while the facility repairs took place.

In March 2003 we moved back into the gym and celebrated with a grand reopening.
